A QUESTION OF IMAGINATION

Hans Christian Andersen - wit, artist, traveller

Hans Andersen was not only a writer of fairy stories, but a born satirist, an enthusiastic traveller and a talented visual artist. In youth, untaught, he produced vivid sketches of his travels in Italy, Turkey and Greece.

Throughout his life he cut out enchanting paper figures based on Danish folk tales, together with remarkable collages. And he put his own amazing life into his stories, together with thumbnail portraits of his friends. "Life" says this backstreet cobbler's son "is the greatest fairy story of all!"
The 80 coloured slides accompanying this talk include many by courtesy of the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Odense. Among these are Andersen's own sketches, papercuts and collages, and illustrations of his stories by artists from all over the world, including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Lars Bo and Kai Nielsen. Also Danish artists of the Golden Age including Christen Kobke and Christian Jensen.
